oxted & district history society
Welcome to the Oxted & District History Society
The Oxted & District History Society (ODHS) was formally established on 24 November 1960 with Major R.H. Leveson-Gower of Titsey Place, Oxted (pictured above), as its first President and Mr W. J. C. Gill BA AKC as its chairman.
The Society presents an annual programme of talks which take place fortnightly on Tuesdays at 8pm between October and March. There are ten main talks each year and two shorter ones, at Christmas and at the AGM in March.
The details of the programme for our next season, which begins on Tuesday 5 October 2021, can be found here. We had hoped to resume meetings at our usual venue, the United Reformed Church, Bluehouse Lane, Oxted, RH8 0AA, but this is not possible at the present time so continued use will be made of Zoom. The position is however being kept under constant review and we aim to hold full, live meetings as soon as circumstances permit. Members will be kept informed of any changes to the format or content of the programme
Talks cover all areas and periods of history and the Society is not specifically concerned with local history. There are, however, usually several talks a year on topics relating to Oxted or Surrey and its neighbouring counties and London. Recent and past speakers have included:
The annual membership fee is £20 per person. Guests are very welcome to attend for a fee of £4 per meeting and there are a limited number of places available for visitors at our Zoom meetings. If you would like to become a member or attend a meeting, please contact the Society through the email address given below.
More information on membership and on our meetings can also be found here.
The Society also organises an annual summer visit to a place of historic interest in the south east. Recent outings have included Brooklands Motor & Aviation Museum, Brighton Pavilion, Jane Austen’s House and Bletchley Park, the wartime Enigma intelligence centre. Circumstances prevented a visit last year and the committee has, with regret, now decided not to organise one in 2021. It is hoped that we will be able to resume these popular events next year. Further information about our past outings can be found here.
If you are seeking information or are carrying out research into the history of Oxted and the neighbouring area, or the county of Surrey, many of the web sites listed on our links page may be of interest. Please note that the Society does not hold any archives of its own.
